About Levitra

Levitra (Vardenafil Hydrochloride) is a prescription medicine taken orally for the treatment of erectile dysfunction in men. ED is a condition in which the penis does not harden and expand satisfactorily upon sexual stimulation or when it becomes difficult to maintain an erection for successful penetration. Levitra helps maintain an erection for effectual penetration on being sexually excited.

Levitra does not:

  • Cure ED
  • Increase a man's sexual desire
  • Protect a man or his partner from sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), including HIV
  • Serve as a male form of birth control

Approved for use as the third oral ED pill, Levitra is manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals Corporation, marketed by GlaxoSmithKline, and distributed and marketed by Schering Corporation.

Levitra for Erectile Dysfunction

Currently, erectile dysfunction (ED) is not curable, but PDE5 inhibitors, including Levitra, help in effective management of ED. Levitra may help in getting and keeping a quality erection for penetration. There is a noticeable improvement in both erection hardness and in the ability to maintain an erection during sex but only in the presence of sexual stimulation. On completion of the sex act, blood flow to the penis decreases and the erection goes away.

  • Levitra is an approved prescription medication.
  • Levitra works on the body and not the mind. It does not have the ability to increase sex drive, is not an aphrodisiac and neither does it make you want to have sex all the time.
  • Levitra does not give an embarrassing instant erection without sexual stimulation.
  • Although, Levitra will work for several hours, the erection should only last for as long as you are sexually stimulated
  • Levitra is meant to be used in men with ED and cannot be given to women or children.

How does Levitra work?

Levitra belongs to a class of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors. It helps increase blood flow to the penis to improve erectile function. Vardenafil Hydrochloride, the active ingredient in Levitra, works specifically on the chain of events that occurs in the penis during arousal. As a result, two large chambers in a man's penis fill up with blood.

In clinical trials, Levitra was shown to help men get and keep an erection that lasted long enough for successful intercourse.

  • Levitra must be taken about an hour before intercourse. In clinical studies, most men were able to successfully begin sexual activity before this time
  • Levitra may be taken with or without food
  • Levitra is known to work efficiently in a broad range of conditions, including diabetes, high cholesterol, or high blood pressure
  • Levitra is known to work successfully in most men, including those taking one or more types of blood pressure medication

Levitra dosages

LEVITRA is available in 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg, and 20mg tablets. However, the starting dose of Levitra is 10mg and should be taken no more than once per day. In patients taking alpha blockers, lower doses of Levitra may be prescribed by their doctors. In patients taking certain medications such as ritonavir, indinavir, saquinavir, atazanavir, ketoconazole, itraconazole, erythromycin and clarithromycin, lower doses of Levitra are recommended, and time between doses may need to be extended.

Dosage may vary from person to person with regards to a variety of factors such as age and severity of condition among others. Take the exact prescribed amount of Levitra so as not to alter the effects of the medication or to prevent an overdose.

Levitra side effects

Levitra can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure to unsafe levels if taken with certain other medicines such as nitrates and alpha-blockers, and recreational drugs that contain nitrates called “poppers”. Sudden drop in blood pressure can cause dizziness, fainting, heart attack, or stroke.

Uncommon side effects of Levitra use include:

  • An erection that will not go away (priapism)
  • Vision changes, such as seeing a blue tinge to objects or having difficulty telling the difference between the colors blue and green
  • Sudden loss or decrease in hearing, sometimes with ringing in the ears and dizziness

Common side effects of Levitra use include:

  • Headache
  • Indigestion
  • Upset Stomach
  • Dizziness
  • Flushing
  • Stuffy or runny nose

Levitra Precautions

You should not take Levitra if you:

  • Take any medicines called “nitrates” as such combinations could cause blood pressure to drop to an unsafe level
  • Use recreational drugs called “poppers”, like amyl nitrate and butyl nitrate
  • Have been told by your healthcare professional to not have sexual activity because of health problems

People who have a higher chance of eyesight loss include those who:

  • Have heart disease
  • Are over 50 years old
  • Have diabetes
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have high cholesterol
  • Smoke
  • Have certain eye problems

It is essential to discuss your medical conditions, including heart problems, and medications, including alpha blockers prescribed for prostate problems or high blood pressure, with your doctor to ensure that Levitra is the right medication for you and that you are healthy enough for sexual activity. Levitra is not recommended in men with uncontrolled high blood pressure.

Levitra, with Vardenafil as its main ingredient, produces improved erections. Working in as fast as 16-30 minutes, Levitra relaxes the muscles within the penis and allows for increased blood flow which is necessary to achieve and maintain an erection.
