A hot stone massage is a massage that utilizes delicate cut and heated volcanic basalt stones. These types of rocks are chosen because they retain heat well and have a relaxing effect on the muscles. These stones are heated in 120-150F degree water in preparation for the massage. The stones are placed on certain parts of the spine or placed in the palms of the hands or between the toes of the feet they open up meridians of energy throughout the body. When energy is freely flowing muscles are loosened and tension is released.

Several differing massage techniques accompany the hot stones. Swedish massage is the most popular type of massage. Swedish massage is a very physical massage; the masseuse uses their fingertips, hands, wrists, elbows and upper arm. The pressure is generally stronger than most other types of massage. It is not painful but as it is a deep tissue massage pressure is applied allowing all of the fibers in all the layers of the muscles to release tension and toxins.

The Swedish massage that accompanies the hot stones has definite benefits but the focus of the work is done by the heat of the rocks. The heat of the rocks sends heat to the muscles and allows them to release. The release of the muscles enables the massage to be more effective and enables the masseuse to work deeper into the muscles.

Even through this technique has been around for many years just recently it has been offered at day spas. Many people are drawn to this type of massage as it gives their muscles a change to really release. Due to prior preparation of the rocks, the intricate technical differences and the length of a session a hot stone massage is often more expensive other massages.

Hot stone massages really focuses on rejuvenating the entire body so it is essential to inform your masseuse if you are uncomfortable due to the pressure of the massage or the heat of the stones.

Some benefits of a hot stone massage may be:

  • Release of muscle tension
  • Increase blood flow
  • Release of toxins
  • Decrease stress and anxiety
  • Recharge and increase energy

A hot stone massage would benefit anyone but more specifically people who suffer with:

· Muscle and back Pains

· Arthritis

· Stress, Anxiety

· Circulatory problems

· Insomnia

· Depression

• multiple sclerosis (MS)

To get certified in stone therapy there are numerous 1-3 day comprehensive seminars that teach the techniques and theory. Most people that would take a course like this would already have an extensive knowledge of massage with a background in Swedish massage.
