Toothaches do not discriminate as they affect the young and the old. Parents may, understandably, feel helpless when their child experiences pain. The following are some remedies that could help until you can get your child proper dental care.

Clove Oil

One way to relieve a toothache is to use clove oil. Yes, this natural essential oil has been known to be effective for some time. It has been used to relieve these types of aches by different cultures, and the reason it works is due to its eugenol content. The active ingredient helps numb the area and kill the bacteria causing the pain.

Salt Water

You can also have your child rinse with salt water to kill some of the bacteria in his or her mouth. The salt water could be cold, but it is a better to dissolve some salt in hot water first. Give it to your child when the water is warm so that it will not burn your child’s mouth. The warming sensation helps reduce the pain, at least momentarily.

Ice up

Another remedy that might work is ice. This works the same way heat does except the ice is going to numb the area instead of soothing it like heat does. Now, the effects of ice are not going to last since the body’s core temperature is pretty hot, but it should last long enough for you to get your child to his or her pedodontic oral care specialist.

Peppermint Tea

Peppermint will do two things for your child. For one, the scent helps you relax, which is something your child probably needs at the moment. The second thing that peppermint does is it numbs the mouth though its strength is minimal. Still, it should be enough to help your child.

Ginger Paste

Making a little ginger paste using powdered ginger and water might help relieve the pain. It seems that some of the proteins in ginger are strong enough to help numb certain pains and also reduce inflammation. Some dental aches are a direct result of inflammation, so this might be helpful.

Again, keep in mind that ginger and all the other remedies mentioned here are just meant to help momentarily. These are not cures and should not replace your oral specialist’s suggestions. Hopefully, one of these tips helps alleviate the pain your child is dealing with before visiting a dentist such as Pedodontic Associates Inc.
