A car accident can have a profound impact on your physical and mental health. In addition to chronic muscle, tendon or ligament pain, you may also have nightmares about the accident or an unwillingness to get into a car. Let’s take a look at some things that you can do to overcome both the physical and emotional trauma a car crash can cause.

Take Part in a Yoga Class

Yoga is ideal for those who have just been in a car accident because it focuses on both mental and physical health. Programs can be tailored to accommodate any physical limitations that you have. Over time, you may see a reduction in pain and an increase in flexibility by taking yoga classes.

Engage in Mental and Physical Therapy

After an accident, you may want to make appointments with both physical and mental health therapists. A physical therapist may use acupuncture, massage or other techniques to help ease sore muscles and help regain your range of motion. A mental health therapist may be able to help you work through your emotional issues after an accident and help you move past the event.

Get Back in a Car ASAP

One way to get past your fears is to engage them directly. This may mean getting into a car and driving past the scene of the accident. If you aren’t physically able to drive yourself, ask a friend or family member to drive instead. The more that you get into a vehicle, the easier it will become over time. Eventually, you may be able to ride in or drive a car or truck without any feelings of dread or anxiety.

Try to Reduce Your Reliance on Medication

If it is safe to do so, try to ween yourself from your medication in a timely manner. This may reduce the odds that you develop an addiction and the health problems that it comes with. Doing so may help you sleep better and think more clearly, which may help in your rehab. It is important to note that you should not stop taking medication without discussing the move with your doctor first.

A car accident can have long-term consequences such as leaving you in constant pain or unable to work. By talking with an attorney, it may be possible to obtain compensation for medical bills and other costs related to the crash. This may make it possible to get the mental and physical care that you need to move past the accident.
