This course focuses on solid, evidence-based information on understanding attention deficit disorder in children, adolescents and adults. Please note that this course does not include theories of “Indigo Children” or other New Age approaches to children who are developmentally different.

We believe that before spiritual explanations are considered, a sound science-based understanding of the psychology and complications of ADD/ADHD, of mainstream treatment approaches, and of what life with a person with ADD is like, is necessary in order to be well-informed – whether or not you agree with particular treatment strategies. Even most counsellors and psychotherapists have not studied the ADD syndrome in depth.

This course, like the others in our unique “Awareness” series, aims to enhance the understanding of professionals and lay persons. The course textbook is by a medical professor who is one of the foremost specialists in ADD, but is written for the general educated reader as well as for the professional.

The course looks at the nature of the ADD syndrome and the brain; how ADD affects children, adolescents and adults and how they cope; the differences between ADD and just not paying attention; other disorders that can accompany ADD syndrome; medications and other treatments in use including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy; and ideas for possible future developments in the field.

This course will be of interest to counsellors and therapists as well as all those who care for or come into contact with people with attention deficit disorders. If you are a qualified therapist or health professional this course will lead to the Certificate of Professional Development in Attention Deficit Disorder Awareness - P.D. Cert. (A.D.D.)
