Are you moving into your first apartment or are you considering striking out on your own? First of all, congratulations! Apartment living is what you make of it. Sure, these types of homes can be boring if you don't put a little effort into making it your own—even overwhelmingly so. However, they don't have to be overwhelming at all. Your space can be the perfect spot for you to sit, relax, and regain mental stability. How can you turn your new apartment into a mental oasis and find peace from the world and the chaos of normal life? Here are a few tips to help you get started.

Decorate to Suit You
Some landlords will allow you to paint the walls, while others will not. If you are allowed, consider painting with a color that suits your personality. If not, don't worry -- there are lots of other ways to decorate your new home. You can add colors and textures to your new apartment with your furniture, area rugs, photos, and more. Keep in mind that not every apartment has to have certain things to be a “real” apartment. Your friend down the hall might have a coffee table while you might not have a use for one. It’s all about personal preference. Remember to keep your mental health in mind. If a certain color makes you feel uncomfortable or stressed, stay away. Pick colors and textures that bring you happiness as well as mental peace.

Consider Feng Shui
Feng shui (pronounced fung-SHWAY) is an age-old Chinese system of creating a mental oasis with the principles of interior design. It's a practice based on the idea that our homes mirror whatever is going on within us. Use the principles of feng shui to carefully consider the items you bring into your new home and the way you arrange them. When your home feels good you will feel good being there. However, just like decorating your space, it’s all about personal preference. If you want your couch in the middle of the room and that brings you joy, that’s where you should put it. If it doesn’t work out the way you want it to, you can always change it and try something new later until you find the setup that you love.

Make Sure Everything Works
Typically, the landlord or property manager will want to do a walk-through to make sure everything is in good condition and in good working order, often when you get your keys. If not, be sure to make note of anything that is damaged, and even take pictures of damages if you can. Remember to check appliances, lights, blinds, and so on to make sure nothing is broken or damaged. Doing this toward the beginning of your stay will allow you to address any concerns quickly and help you avoid any worse problems in the future. If you have any concerns or find any problems, talk to your landlord or property management service as soon as you can. Being prompt about maintenance can help you maintain peace of mind while avoiding potential costs for you.

Moving to a new home is a huge step and living on your own can be a great experience if you take the time to make yourself feel at peace. Be sure to consider the above tips for creating a mental oasis and finding peace in your new apartment, and you will truly enjoy your new home.
