Burns Real Food was developed by John Burns BVMS MRCVS as the Holistic Approach to health and nutrition for dogs and cats. It is based upon a home-cooked and natural recipe of brown rice with chicken, lamb, venison or ocean fish, and naturally preserved with vitamin E and Rosemary oil. No wheat, soya, GM ingredients, colours or flavourings are used. Burns Pet Nutrition are widely recognised as one of the UK's most ethical pet food companies. No battery hen meat is used in any Burns products, and the company has been granted approval from the BUAV (British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection) in their 'Not Tested on Animals' scheme – one of the first UK companies to be recognised for their ethical stance on testing. Burns Real Food is economical to feed - around 60p/day for a medium sized dog and 15p/day for an adult cat.
John Burns BVMS MRCVS writes: "For a number of years I recommended my veterinary practice clients to avoid feeding proprietary pet foods but instead to feed a home-made diet of brown rice, vegetables and chicken, fish or meat sold for human consumption. Although a number of people were able to follow this recommendation and achieved remarkable improvements in the health of their pets many found that preparing food at home for the dog was simply too daunting a task. I am sure I lost many clients by making them feel guilty. Now that I have a dog of my own I realise what a burden home preparation is and I doubt if I would be able to do it myself I eventually decided that if I was planning to treat health problems through diet, the food would have to be convenient and readily available."
There are many, many different chemical and physical reactions taking place in the body at all times. Although we can influence one or two of these by drugs, for example, most of these reactions are being carried out by the body itself which is always working to be at its best -to absorb the nutrients it needs, to build and rebuild itself, to resist infection, to eliminate waste products and so on.
Burns Real Food is based on the home-made diet which I used to recommend. There are no secret or magic ingredients. there are no added pharmacologically active supplements. Burns is a simple food which is intended to allow the body to function as it should. In this way Burns enables the body to heal itself, to maintain a state of good health and prevent deterioration of the organ systems.
The main way in which Burns does this is by minimising the amount of waste matter the body needs to eliminate. Burns is based on brown rice, a food which has long been recognised as being beneficial in the prevention and treatment of illness. The main protein source is chicken, fish, venison or lamb which are highly digestible compared to other proteins. Sunflower oil, fish oil and chicken oil provide essential fatty acids and seaweed provides an organic source of minerals.
Some owners think that Burns is not for them because their pet is healthy but the main benefit of Burns is in PREVENTION. It is preferable to prevent damage to the major organs rather than to have to treat a problem which has become established.
For adult dogs there is a choice of Chicken & Brown Rice, Fish & Brown Rice, Lamb & Brown Rice, Burns Organic, High Oats (ideal for the overweight or diabetic dog) or Venison & Brown Rice. For active working dogs there is also Burns Active. For puppies there is Burns Mini Bites, and for the nursing mum Canine Extra which provides for the extra nutritional requirements at this crucial stage. There are also two treats available, Kelties (a biscuit treat) and Ocean Bites (100% organic fish) For cats the re-launched Real Food for Cats – Brown Rice & Chicken is proving a popular choice. Burns now produce a 100% Four Season Organic Food for Garden Birds – table and ground mix, plus organic sunflower seed hearts and peanuts.
