The power of a day. What will you do today? Will everything be the same or will you make a change. Even a small change can alter your feelings and change life dramatically. It can make your life bigger; bring new and unexpected friendships, a more fulfilling life.

When we are children and teenager’s everyday brings something new, a challenge which brings that little feeling of nervousness and fear inside us. When can get these feelings when we learn to ride a bicycle, go on a roller coaster even starting a new school and meeting new friends.

Even as young adults we experience these feelings of fear but now they are caused by other things such as starting a new job, meeting a new partner or buying a new home. But then as life continues these feelings occur less and less and fear slowly leaves our life. We may experience these feelings occasionally, perhaps when a new child is born, when we are promoted, but soon very soon we stop experiencing these flutters, we settle down, promoting our children and watching as they learn and develop.

We forget the feelings of fear, they become alien to us and our lives.

But consider this, how long do you expect to live? Is this it? Will you learn nothing new from now on? We watch our children and think, ‘I wish I had kept up learning the flute/oboe/guitar’ And what do we do about it? Nothing.

Will we never feel that energy again, that fear, that challenge?

But if you were to consider just for a moment what your children are actually doing …. They are learning an instrument, and put in just a few minutes of practise a week and then, after a year they are good enough to join a beginner’s orchestra – just like you have always wanted to do. They take a chance, they expect to sound awful for a while, and then they practice and sound better. They get that excitement of playing in front of others, they risk failure.

When I realised this I realised that I wanted to have those feeling back in my daily life, I wanted ‘to feel the fear’ again. And since I took this decision I have a started a completely new career and created a new and happier life style. I have also learned to play the clarinet, and although my mother always said I was rubbish at music – it turns out I am actually quite good and am now in a small jazz band, and loving it. At first it was nerve wracking, I sounded terrible, my cats left whenever the clarinet came out and I embarrassed myself in front of the teacher. But now I have a new group of friends, including the clarinet teacher.

There was something else, something I had always wanted to do, and yes at the age of 37 I am about to take my bronze tap exam, and guess what ----- I am terrified, and it feels fantastic!
