Your eyes are said to be the lamp of your body, you see the whole world through it so keeping your eyes in a good condition is indispensable. As compared to other sensory organs, eyes are probably most exposed to danger. Simply stepping outside your home when the sun is up can damage your eyes, they are so vulnerable. You certainly cannot risk your eye health as it is responsible to maintain your quality of life.

Eye health can be affected due to number of reasons but the unavoidable sun is one of the prime concerns. You cannot take the sun lightly, it can severely hamper your vision conditions. In fact, not only eyes, even the sensitive skin around the eyes can get damaged due to the harmful sun rays.

Radiation and light emitted from the sun

The invisible rays, wavelength shorter than that of visible light, ultraviolet radiation is extremely dangerous to every human eye.

Sun emits the powerful UVA and UVB. Your eyes exposed to it can lead to burning eyes, constant red eyes, inflammation, cataracts (clouding of the natural eye lens) and to the worse eyelid cancer and skin cancer.

Conjunctival cancer was very rare but suddenly it has increased in a rapid rate. Particularly older people are getting highly affected.

Reports suggest that UV rays is also one of the reasons for age-related macular degeneration that leads to vision loss.

UV can also lead to growth of pterygium which blocks the vision. People who mostly work outdoor under the sun are more prone to this vision condition.

Corneal sunburn, scientifically known as photokeratitis is also caused due to exposure to UV-B rays. Spending too much beach time or skiing without UV protection sunglasses can cause this problem and further can also lead to temporary vision loss. 

The cornea and the lens of the eyes absorbs most of the UV-B rays but these are more dangerous than the UV-A rays. 

Blue light

You thought only digital devices emit blue light? No, in fact, the sun is the biggest and natural source of blue light. The High Energy Visible Light (HEV light) can damage your retina over time and cause serious vision problems. 

Blue light can also lead to macular degeneration and cataract.

How to defend your eyes?

Whether you are heading towards the beach, moving out on a sunny day or even it is an outcast day, protecting your eyes from UV rays is very essential if you want to protect your eye and eyelid from any sort of damage.

  • Go for UV protective sunglasses that assures to block 99-100% of UV rays. The superior quality sunglasses are designed to protect your eyes from both UV-A and UV-B radiation.
  • Polarised sunglasses are also really effective as they cut down the amount of light entering your eyes, eliminate glare and offer maximum comfort outdoors.
  • Make sure the shades you choose, offer maximum coverage. Wraparound style sunglasses are convenient option as they shield your eyes, eyelids and area around your eyes properly.
  • Also do not forget to apply sunscreen around the eyes to protect the delicate skin from sunburn and other severe problems.

No matter what’s the season outside, it is always wise to wear sunglasses and safeguard your eyes from the danger posed by sunlight.
