Oral contraception has become one of the most popular and commonly used hormonal contraceptive methods by women. Combination pills, which are otherwise known as ‘the pill’, consist of two artificial female hormones of oestrogen and progestogen as its active ingredients. The first of these combination pills was introduced in the 1960s and they have continued to grow in popularity since then. These pills have been proven to be almost 100% effective in protecting women from getting pregnant. The two artificial hormones help the pill in preventing pregnancy in three different ways.

What is Yasmin?

Yasmin pills, which are the most popular variety of combination pills, are used by thousands of women to prevent unplanned pregnancies. This pill has been proven to be almost 100% effective in preventing women from getting pregnant. It consists of ethinylestradiol (artificial oestrogen, 30 micrograms) and drospirenone (artificial progestogen, 3 milligrams) as its active ingredients. With the help of these ingredients, this pill prevents pregnancy in three different ways. You are required to take one Yasmin pill on a daily basis for 21 days of your menstrual cycle. You are then to take a break of seven days in between, during which you are likely to have a withdrawal bleed.

What is Cilest?

The Cilest pill is another popular combination pill, which has been proven to be almost 100% effective. It consists of ethinylestradiol (artificial oestrogen, 35 micrograms) and norgestimate (artificial progestogen, 0.25 milligrams) as its active ingredients. This pill is said to be most effective if it is taken on the very first day of your period. Cilest contraceptive pills can also help in reducing heavy periods and painful periods. You are required to take this pill for 21 days of your 28 day menstrual cycle. You are then required to take a break of seven days before you start your new pack, during which time you will usually experience a withdrawal bleed.

What is Loestrin?

Loestrin is one of the most commonly and popularly used combination pills. The Loestrin pill is available in two different dosages of Loestrin 20 and Loestrin 30. It consists of ethinylestradiol (artificial oestrogen) and Norethisterone (artificial progestogen) as its active ingredients. With the help of these two active ingredients, this pill alters the reproductive environment in a way that reduces the probability of conception. You are required to take one Loestrin pill for 21 days of your 28 day menstrual cycle, with a break of seven days in between.

What is Ovranette?

Ovranette is also a popular combination pill and has been proven to be almost 100% effective in preventing pregnancy in women. This pill consists of ethinylestradiol (artificial oestrogen) and levonorgestrel (artificial progestogen) as its active ingredients. You are required to take this pill for 21 days of your 28 day menstrual cycle, with a break of seven days in between. This pill can also help in the treatment of endometriosis and in treating long and painful periods. Ovranette can be taken by women who are 18 years old or above.
