F.M. Alexander (1869-1955) was an actor in Shakespeare's time and due to extreme hoarseness he lost his ability to vocalize his lines. No medical professionals helped him. What to expect from a session?
The sessions are generally one-on-one with a certified instructor. The instructor will guide the student using words and touch to approach mundane movement with a new perspective. A mirror will be used to help the student see themselves and imagine the connective pathways that govern their body. The instructor will encourage their student to analyze their body and see how their pain is related to patterns of tension held in their body is causing joints to compress.
Alexander Technique attempts to re-pattern developed habits. It will take several sessions of repetition to see progress. Eventually the principles and ideals that Alexander Technique emphasizes soon will become apart of the students daily movement vocabulary.
