Reflexology is a type of bodywork that focuses on reliving stress and tension in the body through the hands and feet. There are reflexes in the hands and feet that correspond to glands, organs and other parts of the body. A reflexology therapist can detect imbalance within the body by palpating the hands and feet. By massaging and pressing specific landmarks they can stimulate and send energy to the unbalanced areas of the body.
Benefits of reflexology
Reflexology has short and long term benefits. Immediately after a session of reflexology relaxation and a release of stress and tension are apparent benefits. More long term benefits have been reported as reduced pain from migraines, constipation, neck and back problems, reduced PMS symptoms, increased circulation and an improved immune system.
Reflexology Training
In order to practice Reflexology it is recommended to enroll in a 200 hour program. Most 200 hour programs offer a wide range of information and hands on practice while preparing students to create business opportunities for themselves. Such programs might offer the following:
- General anatomy & physiology
- Reflexology theory
- Reflexology history
- Mapping of the foot and hand
- Observation and palpation skills
- Business development skill, ethics and standards
- Self-help, exercises and body mechanics
- Outside Practicum
- Reflexology seminars
Before researching Reflexology training programs go in for a reflexology session and ask the therapist questions. Ask where they revived their training, what they liked and what they would have done differently. Also, when finding the right program you might want to consider finding a program that offers a hands on approach and with teachers that can guide you.
Just like all education Reflexology training will cost money but if you have done sufficient homework and found a trustworthy, respectable program the money will be worth it. Remember that graduating from a reflexology program is just the beginning. Reflexology has so much to offer, make sure you continue to learn by attending seminars and becoming members of useful organizations.
Reflexology membership organization
Depending on where you live will depend on what organizations are available to you but it's a great idea to become a certified member of a notable organization. America Reflexology Certification Board (ARCO) certifies only Reflexologist's that meet high standards. Being a member of such organizations will look great on a resume and offer opportunities for you to grow in the industry.
