Rolfing is a therapy that combines hand manipulation of tissue or fascia and movement sequencing to re-align the body's center of gravity, improve posture and general well being. The name "Rolfing" was derived from the founder of the therapy Dr. Ida P. Rolf. Dr Rolf began her journey of developing this technique that has spread throughout the world just fifty years ago. People from all walks of life have benefited from this glorious holistic approach to improving posture called "Rolfing". Dancers, actors, athletes, business men, stay at home mums and children have all experienced the dramatic change Rolfing has to offer. Not only did their posture improve their energy levels increased, muscles were strengthened, pain reduced, chronic problems lessened, muscles worked efficiently, performance increased and confidence was boosted.

Theory Of Rolfing

Structural interrogation is the key. Rolfing breaks down a build up of unwanted tissue. This tissue or fascia is developed by posture that is out of the natural line of gravity. Due to sedentary lifestyles the human body is forced to compress in un-natural positions which caused the body to create fascia that supports these un-natural positions. After time the neuromuscular system understands this un-natural position as normal and natural. The aim of Rolfing is to re-educate the body of its natural placement in relation to gravity or in other words regaining its structural interrogation.

Rolfing Technique

Rolfers work with the deep myofascial structures. The myofascial structures are loose connective strong tissue that contains fat and covers all muscles. Rolfers use gentle hands on techniques but due to the build up of different types of fascia some people may experience discomfort during the massage.

Different techniques have been developed that release immobilized joints increasing mobility and stability. Freeing up joints can release tension that has built up over long periods of time and can feel invigorating and powerful to re-gain control over your body.

Even though Rolfing has developed break through techniques it also focuses on creating a holistic experience for each patient. When a patient embarks on the journey that Rolfing has to offer they not only enjoy the physical benefits but also they experience emotion, spiritual and mental growth.

The movement component that accompanies the manipulation of tissue is an excellent teaching tool. Rolfers use movement exercises to help their patient understand through feeling the correct and incorrect muscular patterns. As posture improves and fascia is broken up the muscles are more able to move with efficiency reducing injury and ware on the body.

Rolfing aims to educate each patient about their body and their responsibility to maintain optimal function. Alignment is the key to optimal function. Once a person begins to understand the structural integrity of the human body and experience the health benefits it becomes hard to return to old habits, rather you become a new and improved being.
