Lasik surgery is an exciting step towards better vision and greater self-confidence. Plan to rest for at least a day after the surgery, and consider scheduling the appointment right before the weekend so that you have plenty of time to recover.

Rest Your Eyes

Resting immediately after your eye surgery is extremely important. Ask someone to drive you back from your appointment, and consider taking a nap when you get home. Don’t plan on watching television, reading, or otherwise engaging in strenuous visual activities for the next 24 hours.

Your vision may be blurry for the first few hours after your procedure, but this will wear off. You might also experience light sensitivity, irritation, and general discomfort. If your doctor has recommended any painkillers, take them as instructed.

Wear Sunglasses

Your eyes will be sensitive to light for up to a week after your Lasik surgery. Wear sunglasses whenever you go outside; if you don’t own any, the clinic may be able to give you a disposable pair.

While you’re at home, keep the lights dim for a day or two. You may want to consider wearing an eye mask while you sleep to block additional light.

This light sensitivity lasts a different length of time for each person. Gradually re-introduce yourself to direct light, and take breaks if your eyes feel tired. Talk to your doctor if you’re still experiencing noticeable effects after the first week or two.

Use Eye Drops

Dry eyes are a common symptom after Lasik surgery. It’s important to keep your eyes moist during the recovery period; this will help them heal correctly. Your doctor will likely give you eye drops or make a brand recommendation. Follow their advice, and use the eye drops as instructed.

Avoid rubbing your eyes to reduce dryness or itching; this could disrupt the healing process. Try blinking a few times to relieve the irritation. You should also drink plenty of water to help your eyes stay hydrated.

Avoid Contaminants

Your eyes are at a minor risk of infection for the first month after your surgery. Avoid wearing mascara, using eye creams, or otherwise putting materials near your eyes. When you shower, keep soap and other chemicals away from the eye area. If you get anything in your eyes, rinse them gently with water.

It’s also smart to stay away from swimming pools and hot tubs during this recovery period. In general, avoid exposing your eyes to any chemicals or moisture until your doctor gives you clearance.

Follow Up with Your Doctor

Schedule a follow-up visit with your doctor within the first week or two after your surgery. You should also return to the clinic if you experience any severe pain or if your vision does not return within the first 24 hours.

Depending on the severity of your vision problems, your eyes could take longer than a month to heal. Follow your doctor’s advice, and attend every follow-up appointment until your eyes are fully healed.

Recovering from Lasik surgery is a matter of resting your eyes and avoiding irritants. If you follow your doctor’s instructions, your eyes will heal in no time.
