If the doctor has just told you or a loved one that you have osteoporosis, then you may be wondering how many changes you will need to make in your life. Approximately 33 percent of women over the age of 50 will have an osteoporosis fraction while 20 percent of men over 50 will experience one. If you are among this group, then you have many different options in treatment plans.

 

Drug Therapies

There are many different drug therapies available, so it is important to work with physicians to find the one that works best for you. Osteoporosis treatments often involve taking a daily medication in pill form. Others receive regular injections and others get intravenous transfusions on a regular basis. Regardless of the medication that you and your doctor decide, it is important that you continue treatment or talk to your doctor about a different one.

 

Physical Therapy

Your doctor may recommend that you work with a physical therapist to keep your bones as strong as possible and to try to reduce the risk of fractures. Weight-bearing exercises may help to build bones while other exercises may be designed to help you be more flexible. If you experience a fracture, then a physical therapist can help you restore range of motion and help you stay comfortable while the fracture heals. The physical therapist may also work with your doctor to determine if you need to use canes, wheelchairs or other assistive equipment.

 

Occupational Therapy

Your doctor may also recommend that you work with an occupational therapist. This person will help you figure out ways to do daily tasks so that you are less likely to develop a fracture. If you do get one, then they can help you learn to deal with the short-and-long-term effects of that fracture. You can expect the majority of their focus to be on daily living tasks like bathing, cooking and cleaning.

 

Nutritional Therapy

Your doctor may also ask you to work with a nutritionist to develop a plan that is right for you. The lack of Vitamin D and calcium can be a primary factor in the development of osteoporosis. Therefore, you may be asked to eat foods high in calcium like almonds, cheese and okra. Getting to an ideal weight has been shown to reduce the likelihood of fractures.

 

There are many things that your doctor may recommend you do after he has diagnosed you with osteoporosis. It is important that you work with each member of the team to implement a plan that is right for you. Then, you can return to a normal life knowing how to best prevent any other problems from your fragile bones.
